Unit 6 Grammar Masterclass • الدليل الشامل لقواعد الوحدة

Deep conceptual breakdown of grammatical structures, visual comparison matrices, and Saudi ESL learner alerts.

⚡

Past Simple Masterclass: Regular & Irregular Verbs, Negatives & Questions

Master past narratives, spelling shifts, auxiliary “did / didn’t”, and short answers (CEFR A2 Standard)

1. Regular Verbs: The +ed Suffix & Spelling Rules

To form the past simple of regular verbs in positive statements, we add -ed to the base verb for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).

Rule Type Base Verb Past Simple Example Sentence
General Rule (+ed) work, play, watch worked, played, watched We played football yesterday afternoon.
Verbs ending in -e (+d) live, decide, arrive lived, decided, arrived They lived in Dammam for six years.
Consonant + y → -ied study, marry, carry studied, married, carried She studied computer science at university.
1 Vowel + 1 Consonant (Double) stop, plan, travel stopped, planned, travelled The driver stopped at the red traffic signal.

2. High-Frequency Irregular Verbs Matrix

Irregular verbs do NOT take -ed. Their past forms must be memorized:

go → went
We went to the desert yesterday.
have → had
They had a family dinner.
see → saw
I saw an old friend at the souq.
meet → met
He met his business partner in 2018.

3. Negative & Question Structures (The Auxiliary "DID")

In negative statements and questions, we use the auxiliary did / didn’t + BASE FORM of the verb (Infinitive without to). Never conjugate the main verb when “did” is present!

⚠️ CRITICAL ESL / SAUDI ERROR ALERT: Double Past Trap
❌ I didn’t went to the university yesterday. (WRONG)
✅ I didn’t go to the university yesterday. (CORRECT: didn't + base verb)
