Used to for Past Habits & The Second Conditional
الحديث عن العادات والحالات السابقة (Used to) والحالة الشرطية الثانية للتخيل والافتراض (Second Conditional)
In Unit 7, we explore how English speakers contrast past habits with the present using 'used to', and how they discuss hypothetical dreams, advice, and imaginary dilemmas using the Second Conditional.
1. Used to: Past Habits & States vs Present Habits
١. العادات والحالات الماضية (Used to) مقابل العادات الحاضرة
We use 'used to + base verb' to talk about past repeated actions (habits) or past states that were true for a period in the past, but are NO LONGER true today.
Affirmative Form: Subject + used to + base verb
Always followed by the bare infinitive. 'Used to' does not change with subject (I / you / he / she / they used to).
Subject + used to + base verb
✓ I used to live in a crowded city apartment, but now I live in the countryside.
✓ She used to have long hair when she was at school.
Negative Form: Subject + didn't use to + base verb
Notice that 'use' drops the 'd' after the auxiliary 'didn't'.
Subject + didn't use to + base verb
✓ We didn't use to have high-speed internet when I was a child.
✓ He didn't use to exercise, but now he runs marathons.
Question Form: Did + subject + use to + base verb?
Use 'Did' and 'use to' (without 'd').
Did + subject + use to + base verb?
✓ Did you use to walk to school every morning?
✓ Where did they use to spend their summer holidays?
Present Habits: Use Present Simple + usually / normally (NOT *I use to*)
'Used to' ONLY exists for the past. For present habits, use 'usually' with the Present Simple.
Subject + usually/normally + present simple verb
✓ I usually drink green tea in the morning. (NOT: *I use to drink green tea*)
2. The Second Conditional: Form, Formation & Meaning
٢. الحالة الشرطية الثانية (Second Conditional): التكوين والمعنى التخيلي
We use the Second Conditional to talk about unreal, imaginary, hypothetical, or highly improbable situations in the present or future, and their imagined results.
Basic Formula: If + Past Simple, ... would / wouldn't + base verb
The 'If-clause' uses the Past Simple (to signal psychological distance from reality), while the main result clause uses 'would + bare infinitive'.
If + Subject + Past Simple, Subject + would/wouldn't + base verb
✓ If I won a million dollars, I would buy a large farm in the countryside.
✓ If she had more free time, she would learn Japanese.
Reversible Clauses (Comma Rule)
The sentence can start with the result clause. When the main clause comes first, NO comma is used.
Subject + would + base verb + if + Subject + Past Simple
✓ I would travel around the world if I had unlimited vacation days.
✓ He wouldn't relocate to another city if he loved his current job.
3. Second Conditional Variations: Could, Might & 'If I were you'
٣. تنويعات الشرطية الثانية: (Could / Might) وتقديم النصح بـ (If I were you)
Instead of 'would' (certain hypothetical result), we can use 'could' (hypothetical ability/permission) or 'might' (hypothetical possibility).
Could & Might in the Result Clause
'Could' = would be able to; 'Might' = would perhaps / possibly.
If + Past Simple, Subject + could/might + base verb
✓ If we had a bigger car, we could take all our camping gear. (Ability)
✓ If you asked the manager politely, he might approve your leave. (Possibility)
Giving Advice: If I were you, I would...

٤. المقارنة الحاسمة: الشرطية الأولى (واقعية محتملة) مقابل الشرطية الثانية (تخيلية افتراضية)
Understanding the speaker's perspective determines whether to use the First or Second Conditional.
First Conditional (Real / Likely Future): If + Present Simple, will + base
Used for real possibilities that the speaker believes could genuinely happen.
If + present simple, will + base verb
✓ If it rains tomorrow, we will cancel the outdoor picnic. (Realistic possibility)
Second Conditional (Unreal / Hypothetical): If + Past Simple, would + base
Used for imaginary or improbable situations contrary to present facts.
If + past simple, would + base verb
✓ If animals could talk, the world would be very noisy. (Completely imaginary)
⚠️ Critical Saudi Learner Diagnostic Pitfalls
⚠️ Critical Pitfall 1: Using 'I use to' for Present Habits
استخدام (I use to) للتعبير عن عادة في الحاضر (خطأ شائع جداً)
In English, 'used to' only exists in the past. To express a present habit or routine, you MUST use the Present Simple tense with 'usually' or 'normally'.
❌ *I use to go to the gym three times a week now. (INCORRECT) ✔️ I usually go to the gym three times a week now. (CORRECT)
⚠️ Critical Pitfall 2: 'Would' in the If-Clause (*If I would have...*)
وضع (would) داخل جملة (If) الشرطية (خطأ تركيبي جسيم)
Never put 'would' in the condition (if-clause). The if-clause takes the Past Simple, while 'would' goes ONLY in the main result clause.
❌ *If I would win the lottery, I would buy a house. (INCORRECT) ✔️ If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. (CORRECT)
⚠️ Critical Pitfall 3: Spelling of Negative and Question (*didn't used to*)
كتابة (didn't used to) بحرف الـ d الزائد بعد did
Because 'did' already carries the past tense, 'use' must be in its base form without 'd'.
❌ *He didn't used to like coffee. / *Did you used to live here? ✔️ He didn't use to like coffee. / Did you use to live here?
⚠️ Critical Pitfall 4: 'Used to + Verb' vs 'Be used to + -ing'
الخلط بين (used to do) للعادة الماضية و (be used to doing) للاعتياد والتأقلم
• 'I used to drive on the left' = كنت أقود على اليسار في الماضي والآن لا.
• 'I am used to driving on the left' = أنا معتاد ومتأقلم على القيادة على اليسار الآن.
❌ *I am used to live in Riyadh. (confused meaning) ✔️ I used to live in Riyadh. (Past state) / I am used to living in Riyadh. (Accustomed)
